Berry picking!

BUGS Summer Camp is officially in session! We just finished our first week and it was lots of fun. On Tuesday, Ms. Brittany and I took the girls to Larriland Farm in Western Howard County to pick raspberries. This is always a fun and relaxing trip because we get to spend time outdoors together while eating lots and lots of delicious, perfectly ripe and fresh fruit right from the bush. The BUGS students did a great job finding and picking the ripest berries we could find, and by the end we had pounds and pounds of berries to take home with us!

The next day in cooking class, we did a blind taste test between raspberries from the grocery store and the raspberries that we picked from the farm. It was easy for everyone to tell the difference because both the taste and texture are really different. Most of us agreed that the berries from the farm were much tastier! After that, we made a delicious berry crisp using the raspberries from Larriland. And, while we waited for the crisp to bake, we snacked on cucumbers we picked from our garden. Gotta love the summer! :)

Community Day at BUGS

Last week was our final week of BUGS for the school year. The last week of BUGS is fun for both students and staff as it's full of events and celebrations. On Tuesday, we had a pizza party with our reading specialist Ms. Mara to celebrate our reading success over the course of the year. On Thursday, we held our Closing Ceremony to congratulate the 5th graders for completing the BUGS program and to wish them luck going into middle school. And Wednesday was our Community Day!

Community Day is a field day in which the BUGS students are taken out of their normal, age- and gender-based groups and placed into random groups of varying ages and genders. This is a great opportunity for our students to work with other kids that they don't normally work with. Groups rotate from teacher to teacher to play all sorts of fun games. This year, students did a tug-of-war with Mr. Tyone, a water balloon relay with Mr. Terry, a hula-hoop version of musical chairs with Ms. Rachel, a life-savers-sticking-on-your-face challenge with Ms. Brittany, and made giant bubbles with Ms. Ronnie. After playing all of the games, we all got to enjoy our last moments at BUGS together with Rita's. It was such a fun day! Check it out:

Now, while the BUGS kids finish out their (very long---thanks snow) school year at CJR, we are preparing for our summer program that starts in a few weeks. It's going to be a blast!
